Американское космическое ведомство (НАСА) сообщило, что полетные испытания разрабатываемого космического корабля "Орион" (Orion Spacecraft) намечены на начало 2014 г. Как отметил помощник директора НАСА Уильям Герстенмайер, цель испытания, которое будет проводиться в автоматическом режиме и обойдется в 370 млн долл. - убедиться в жизнеспособности корабля при входе в плотные слои атмосферы при возвращении на Землю на большой скорости.

 

Предполагается, что "Орион" совершит два витка вокруг планеты, поднявшись на высоту до 8 тыс км, затем помчится к ее поверхности, разогнавшись до скорости 32 тыс км в час, и приводнится в Тихом океане. Для сравнения, американские шаттлы, на смену которым должен прийти "Орион", входили в плотные слои атмосферы на скорости 28 тыс км в час. "Это испытание позволит получить нам очень важные данные, необходимые для проверки конструкции аппарата", - подчеркнул Герстенмайер.
