Гранатомет HK79 разработан германской компанией Heckler und Koch для установки на винтовки этой же фирмы, такие как 7.62мм G3 и 5.56мм HK33 и G41. Кроме вооруженных сил Германии этот гранатомет использовался в ВС Норвегии и еще нескольких стран, имевших на вооружении винтовки HK G3.
Подствольный гранатомет HK79 однозарядный, с нарезным стволом. Ствол в передней части шарнирно прикреплен к раме гранатомета и его казенная часть для перезарядки откидывается вниз. Защелка ствола расположена в задней части гранатомета, там же расположены рычаг ручного взведения ударника и предохранитель. Спусковая клавиша находится на левой стороне рамы гранатомета, над его стволом. На винтовку НК79 крепится вместо штатного цевья. Сверху на ствольную коробку винтовки крепится складной целик, имеющий прицельную шкалу, маркированную от 50 до 350 метров с шагом 50 метров.
