Пистолет WIST-94 был разработан польским военным институтом техники и вооружений (WITU - Wojskowy Instytut Techniczny Uzbrojenia) в период с 1992 по 1994 годы и производится заводом Prexer, расположенным в городе Лодзь. Пистолет WIST-94 в 1997 году принят на вооружении Польской армии.
Пистолет WIST-94 построен на основе автоматики, использующей энергию отдачи при коротком ходе ствола. Запирание осуществляется по традиционной Браунинговской схеме, снижение ствола при отпирании производится при взаимодействии фигурного выреза в выступе под казенной частью ствола с поперечным штифтом в рамке. Рамка пистолета выполнена из ударопрочного полимера. Ударно-спусковой механизм ударниковый, только двойного действия, имеет автоматическую блокировку ударника при ненажатом спусковом крючке. Ручных (неавтоматических) предохранителей не предусмотрено. Помимо базового варианта также выпускается пистолет WIST-94L, имеющий интегральный лазерный целеуказатель в приливе рамки перед спусковой скобой.
