Пистолет M57 был разработан и производился в Югославии на заводе Crvena Zastava в качестве армейского оружия. В его основу была положена конструкция советского пистолета Токарева ТТ, скопированная практически без изменений, за исключением удлиненной рукоятки М57, вмещавшей более емкий магазин (9 патронов против 8 у ТТ).
Пистолет M57 имеет автоматику с подвижным стволом и жестким запиранием затвора по системе Браунинга. Расцепление ствола и затвора при откате осуществляется при помощи качающейся серьги, связывающей ствол и рамку оружия. Ударно-спусковой механизм курковый, одинарного действия (несамовзводный). Курок, боевая пружина и шептало объединены в один легкосъемный модуль. Ручных предохранителей (кроме полувзвода курка) не предусмотрено. Магазин однорядный, защелка магазина расположена слева в основании спусковой скобы.
