Colt Detective Special создан компанией Кольт (США) в 1927 году в качестве компактного оружия самообороны и для скрытого ношения полицейскими в штатском, детективами и вообще всеми, кто нуждается в подобном оружии. Компания несколько раз прекращала и возобновляла производство Detective Special. Первый выпуск был закончен в 1936 году, последний, третий, был начат в 1973 году и закончен несколько лет спустя.
Detective Special представляет собой классический компактный револьвер двойного действия с цельной рамкой, откидным влево барабаном на 6 патронов, УСМ двойного действия. Экстрактор имеет ход, равный длине гильзы патрона .38Сп, прицельные приспособления максимально упрощенные - неподвижная мушка на стволе и целик в виде продольной канавки на верхней поверхности рамки.
