Пистолет Форти-Найн разработан в Бельгии фирмой Фабрик Насьональ, Герсталь, специально в качестве служебного и полицейского оружия. Пистолет имеет полимерную рамку со стальными направляющими для затвора, вполнеными по всей длине рамки (у большинства пистолетов с полимерной рамкой направляющие имеют небольшую длину для уменьшения веса). Пистолет построен по модифицированной Браунинговской схеме запирания за окно для экстракции гильз при коротком ходе затвора и снижении ствола для расцепления при взаимодействии фигурного выреза в приливе ствола с элементами рамки пистолета.
УСМ - ударниковый, только двойного действия, с усилием срабатывания 4-5 кг. На рамке под стволом выполнены направляющие для тактического фонаря или лазерного целеуказателя. Прицел (мушка и целик) имеет светящиеся точки для облегчения прицеливания в сумерках.
