Пистолет CZ-85 был разработан в 1985 году как модификация знаменитого пистолета CZ-75. Основным и единственным отличием CZ-85 от CZ-75 стало наличие рычажков предохранителя и затворной задержки не только на левой, но и на правой стороне рамки. В остальном эти пистолеты идентичны. После модернизации пистолетов CZ-75 до модификации CZ-75B (добавился автоматический предохранитель, блокирующий ударник), пистолеты CZ-85 также были модернизированы аналогичным образом, получив обозначение CZ-85B. Вариант CZ-85B Combat отличается от базового варианта CZ-85B только тем. что имеет регулируемый целик вместо фиксированного, и предназначен для спортивной стрельбы по правилам IPSC, IDPA и других организаций.
