Пистолет Р225 является уменьшенной модификацией полноразмерного "армейского" пистолета Р220. Р225 разрабатывался специально на конкурс, объявленный полицией ФРГ в середине 1970х годов на новый полицейский пистолет, надежный, компактный и безопасный в обращении. Во второй половине 1970х Р225 был официально одобрен для вооружения полиции ФРГ и получил обозначение P6 (Pistole 6). Он состоит на вооружении ряда полицейских департаментов ФРГ и Швейцарии, кроме того, он используется в полицейских формированиях многих других стран, а также в вооруженных силах Канады.
По устройству Р225 полностью аналогичен стандартному варианту пистолета Р220 с алюминиевой рамкой. Большинство пистолетов Р225 имеют кнопку защелки магазина в основании спусковой скобы, однако пистолеты самых ранних серий, выпущенные для швейцарской полиции, имели защелки магазина в основании рукоятки.
