Пистолет-пулемет FBP m/976 был принят на вооружение португальской армии в 1976 году на замену устаревшему пистолету-пулемету FBP m/948. По сравнению с предшественником новый пистолет-пулемет был более безопасен в обращении.

Пистолет-пулемет FBP m/976 использует автоматику со свободным затвором. Стрельба ведется с открытого затвора, одиночными выстрелами либо очередями. Предохранитель / переводчик режимов огня расположен слева на спусковой коробке, над спусковым крючком. Дополнительно в конструкции предусмотрен автоматический предохранитель на тыльной части рукоятки, блокирующий затвор. Большая часть элементов оружия выполнена штамповкой из стали, ствол закрыт съемным перфорированным кожухом. Приклад выдвижной телескопический, из металлической проволоки.
