Впервые гусеничную боевую машину разработают специально для российского флота, а не возьмут из сухопутной техники. МО РФ заказало для флота разработку новой самоходки, способной перемещаться по суше и по воде и удерживаться на плаву даже при сильном морском волнении. Создание флотской БМП поручено Курганмашзаводу.
При разработке этой флотской БМП будут учтены все последние достижения российского танкостроения. Новая машина станет базироваться на универсальной гусеничной платформе «Армата», которую также используют при сборке других типов техники: танка пятого поколения, БМП для Сухопутных войск, боевых машин десанта и зенитных установок.
