Российские ученые заинтересованы в присоединении к европейскому проекту исследования Марса "ЭкзоМарс" (ExoMars), поскольку это значительно ускорит продвижение российской программы по исследованию планеты, а также позволит сократить расходы на эти проекты, сказал заместитель директора Института космических исследований РАН Олег Кораблев.
Совместный проект Европейского космического агентства и НАСА "ЭкзоМарс" первоначально предполагал отправку в 2016 году орбитального зонда для исследования Марса и высадку на его поверхность посадочного модуля, а в 2018 году - отправку марсохода. Однако НАСА из-за недостатка финансирования заявило, что не предоставит свой носитель "Атлас" для запуска. Ученые связывают выход НАСА из программы с ростом расходов на космический телескоп "Джеймс Вебб" (James Webb Space Telescope - JWST), который должен стать наследником "Хаббла".
