В рамках оснащения Вооруженных Сил РФ новыми образцами вооружения и военной техники 31 октября в состав Военно-воздушных сил России передан модернизированный многофункциональный комплекс А-50У самолет радиолокационного дозора и наведения. С учетом приобретенного опыта и замечаний воинских частей, эксплуатирующих самолет радиолокационного дозора и наведения А-50, на технике были проведены работы по глубокой модернизации существующего радиотехнического комплекса.
Как сообщалось в официальном пресс-релизе ТАНТК им. Г.М. Бериева основной упор в модернизации сделан на переход на новую элементную базу бортового радиотехнического комплекса (РТК). Это позволило существенно снизить общий вес РТК и облегчить самолет. Как следствие, появилась возможность брать на борт больше топлива при той же взлетной массе. Соответственно, увеличились дальность полета и время выполнения боевой задачи на заданном рубеже.
