Впервые в России в ноябре 2011 года на базе ВВУЗов Министерства обороны России была организована массовая доподготовка военнослужащих-контрактников по занимаемым воинским специальностям. В Западном военном округе доподготовка проходила на базе 20 институтов и учебных центров.
В течение месяца свыше 10 тыс. младших специалистов военно-морского флота, ракетных войск и артиллерии, военно-воздушных сил, войск связи и инженерных войск, войск противовоздушной обороны и войск радиоэлектронной борьбы, проходили доподготовку на базе институтов и учебных центров Западного военного округа. В настоящее время они сдают квалификационные экзамены по пройденным дисциплинам.
