В 1991г. от имени трудового коллектива руководство КБ машиностроения обратилось в Челябинский областной Совет народных депутатов с просьбой о присвоении КБ машиностроения имени академика В.П. Макеева. Челябинский областной Совет народных депутатов удовлетворил просьбу и вынес 17.09.1991 г. Постановление № 170: именовать «Конструкторское бюро машиностроения имени академика В.П. Макеева» (ныне – Открытое акционерное общество имени академика В.П. Макеева).
Специальное конструкторское бюро по ракетам дальнего действия – СКБ-385, впоследствии КБ машиностроения, было создано Правительственным решением от 16 декабря 1947 года. Оно занималось освоением серийного производства ракет разработки ОКБ-1, возглавляемого С.П. Королевым. В середине 50-х гг. приступило к разработке баллистических ракет для подводных лодок. Бессменным руководителем КБ машиностроения на протяжении 30 лет (1955-1985) был талантливый ученый и конструктор, академик В.П. Макеев.
