История создания
Танк Т-80 разработан в специальном конструкторском бюро (СКБ) транспортного машиностроения (ранее КБ №3 Кировского завода, г. Ленинград) группой конструкторов под руководством Николая Сергеевича Попова. Машина принята на вооружение в 1976 году и стала первым в мире серийным танком с основной силовой установкой на базе газотурбинного двигателя. Разработки танковых ГТД в СССР начались в 1955-58 годах. Тогда были изготовлены и испытаны два опытных газотурбинных двигателя мощностью
В конструкции боевой машины частично использованы отработанные элементы танка Т-64А: пушка, боеприпасы, автомат заряжания, отдельные узлы системы управления огнем и броневой защиты. Новый двигатель, увеличившаяся масса танка и изменившиеся динамические характеристики явились причинами разработки новой ходовой части: гусениц с обрезиненными беговыми дорожками, гидроамортизаторов и торсионных валов с улучшенными характеристиками, опорных и поддерживающих катков, ведущих и направляющих колес новой конструкции.
Таким образом, по отдельным элементам конструкции Т-80 был унифицирован с ранее выпущенными танками Т-64А и Т-72, однако в целом это новая машина с повышенным уровнем боевых и технических характеристик
Оборудование
Танк Т-80 защищен комбинированной многослойной броней, а также, как навесным (Т-80БВ), так и встроенным (Т-80У) комплексом динамической защиты. Защищенности танка от кумулятивных снарядов способствуют экраны по бортам корпуса (стальные листы на резиновом фартуке), башни и перед носовой частью.
Т-80 имеет систему коллективной защиты от оружия массового поражения и автоматическое противопожарное оборудование. Силовая установка танка состоит из трехвального ГТД- 1000ТФ с двухкаскадным компрессором, силовой турбиной и регулируемым сопловым аппаратом силовой турбины. Подвеска торсионная с гидроамортизаторами на 1 -, 2- и 6- узлах подвески катков. Гусеница с резинометаллическим шарниром. Танк Т-80 снабжен оборудованием для самоокапывания, самовытаскивания, а также приспособлением для крепления противоминного трала. С 1987 г. выпускалась модификация Т-80УД, оснащенного дизельным двигателем мощностью 1000 л.с.
Вооружение
Т-80 вооружен 125-мм гладкоствольной, стабилизированной в двух плоскостях пушкой со спаренным 7.62-мм пулеметом ПКТ; 12.7-мм зенитным пулеметным комплексом «Утес» на командирской башенке, комплексом защиты от управляемого вооружения и системой пуска дымовых гранат «Туча». Комплекс вооружения также включает прицел-дальномер, ночной прицел и механизм заряжания. Танки Т-80Б получили комплекс УР ПТУР 9К112-1 «Кобра», а Т-80У - комплекс ПТУР 9К119 «Рефлекс». Механизм заряжания заимствован у Т-64.
В систему управления огнем Т-80Б входят лазерный прицел-дальномер, баллистический вычислитель, стабилизатор вооружения, комплект датчиков, контролирующих всю важную информацию (скорость ветра, крен и скорость танка, курсовой угол цели и т.п.). Управление огнем на Т-80У дублировано. Пушка изготовлена с жесткими требованиями к стволу, который снабжен металлическим теплозащитным кожухом, защищающим его от внешних воздействий (солнечные лучи, дождь) и уменьшающим прогиб при нагреве.
Модификации
Т-80Б (1978 г.) — установлена модернизированная пушка, усовершенствованная СУО, введен КУВ, улучшены характеристики защиты. С 1980 года двигатель ГТД-1000ТФ мощностью 1100 л.с.
Т-80БВ (1985 г.) — установлена навесная динамическая защита.
Т-80У (1985 г.) — установлена модернизированная пушка, новая СУО с дублированием от командира, введен новый комплекс управляемого оружия с наведением ракеты по лазерному лучу, газотурбинный двигатель ГТД-1000ТФ мощностью 1100 л.с. (или ГТД-1250 мощностью 1250 л.с.), улучшены характеристики защиты. С 1992 года на танке устанавливается тепловизор.
Т-80УД (1987 г.) — установлен дизель 6ТД мощностью 1000 л.с., динамическая защита во встроенном исполнении
Боевое применение
Москва. Утром 4 октября 1993 года шесть танков Т-80УД 12-го гвардейского танкового полка 4-й гвардейской Кантемировской танковой дивизии выдвинулись на Калининский мост напротив «Белого дома» — здания Верховного совета Российской Федерации. Около 12 часов дня танки открыли огонь. Было выпущено 12 снарядов калибра 125 мм: 2 бронебойно-под-калиберных (непонятно, зачем?) и 10 осколочно-фугасных. После обстрела танки переместились на набережную Т.Шевченко, где и находились до конца дня.
Танки Т-80Б и Т-80БВ использовались Российской Армией в ходе военной операции в Чечне в 1995 — 1996 годах. Прежде всего следует отметить, что «восьмидесятки», как, впрочем, и почти вся другая бронетанковая техника, применялись неадекватно ситуации. В этой связи образцом может служить операция «Буря в пустыне». Тогда заранее был выбран перечень соответствующих ситуации типов вооружения и боевой техники. При этом ставка была сделана на широкое применение средств РЭБ, использование высокоточного оружия, удары авиации и т.д. Следует отметить, что у иракцев фанатизма было, возможно, даже больше, чем у чеченцев. Если бы Многонациональные силы без соответствующей подготовки прибегли к массированному использованию бронетехники, результат всей операции мог бы быть иным.

Танк Т-80 разработан ОАО "Специальное конструкторское бюро транспортного машиностроения", г. Санкт-Петербург. Серийное производство с 1982 г. на ФГУП "Завод имени Кирова" (г. Санкт-Петербург ) - до 1994 г., а также на ФГУП "ОМСКТРАНСМАШ" г. Омск. Образец Т-80УД производится на ныне Казеном предприятии "Паровозостроительный завод имени Малышева", Харьков, Украина.
Танк состоит на вооружении сухопутных войск России, Кипра, Пакистана, Республики Кореи и Украины.
